I for Ink.

I love writing with Fountain pens that I can fill up with real INK.  My favourite pens are made by Watermans in Paris,

I have a fine collection of three ! Two are displayed below,

along with my cherished gold Parker Propelling Pencil with which I like (attempt) to complete cryptic crosswords.

The Ink I use is called Parkers Quink which I believe is the best one can buy, I have used it since my primary school days.

In all it's splendour, (above)  may I present to you, the original bottle of Parkers Royal Blue Quink INK.

I cannot begin to tell you the joy I felt, when I was presented with a fountain pen, an exercise book and bottle of Parkers INK (Quink). This was for the Easter term spelling prize, in my year.

dip pen similar to ones we used in primary school .(Sand McDougall).

When I first learnt to write we began with pencil then progressed with a pen and a pot of INK.

The pot of INK fitted neatly in an ink well which was in the top left hand side of my desk.

Vintage school desk containing an INK well for dip pens.

We've come a long way since the times of  Bob Cratchit a character' from Charles Dickens 'Christmas Carol' story, where poor Bob had to stand all day, at a lecturn type desk using a feather scribe,  to complete his ever increasing work load .

To carry out his duties, this poor fellow had only a feather quill and a pot of ink.

He didn't have the comfort of a swivel chair at a desk, and the ubiquitous PC, to do his work for him.

Just one pot of INK and a scratchy old feather pen.

My! How time flies not a pot of  INK nor feather pen in sight.

My thanks to the illustrious Denise who created ABCW all those years ago, to Roger our illuminating admin man, ably assisted by Leslie who's always incredibly helpful to all who need advice.

    1. Hi Carol, I do love my Waterman pens but also i think Parker and Osman pens are pretty good, I find tha the Watermans pens are easier to hold in my arthritic hands as they have a 'chubbier' barrel.
      Nice to hear from you,
Best wishes to you and youe cute little 'dawgie',

  2. Oh my gosh! You've taken me back to my elementary school days when I, too, learned to write with a nib pen and real ink! But I am glad we've progressed to newer types of pens as I was always getting ink on my hands and it was incredibly difficult to wash off. What a unique post this week, Di.

    1. Hi Leslie,
It seems I'm dwelling a lot in the past of late, is it a sign of age or just the fondest of memories are usually the best?
Now that I have lived for more than 71 years I sure have a lot to write about.
Even with my washable blue ink I still manage to get it all over my hands and arms, I have a habbit of putting my pen down without the lid, then manage to get ink all over the place!
As ever, thanks for your kind comments,
      love Di.

  3. What a wonderful subject to choose for an entry Di.

Long time ago I loved writing with those kinds of pens also, as my joints showed more and more problems I stopped with it and changed to a keyboard at a computer. So I understand your passion

    Have a nice ABC-day / -week

    1. Hi Melody,
Thanks for your kind comments, we both seem to be inflicted with joint problems which, sometimes are dismissed by others as a bit of arthritis, this really irritates me...if only they knew !
My hands are not too bad, I can hold my pens most of the time but sometimes even tapping away on my keyboard hurts like hell. I have got a voice operation thingy on my PC but not yet quite sure how to operate it, although I haven't tried it yet! I'd like to be able to draw little sketches to accompany my blogs but then, haven't worked out how to do that either..I'm a bit of a Philistine when it comes to technology.
Hopeyou have good pain relief for your problematic joints,
      Best wishes,
      Di.

  6. Two of my Waterman pens I bought on E-Bay for a good price and in immaculate condition as they are hellishly
expensive retail. I'm on the lookout for another one.
One of the said pens was in a special box with ink, a change of nib and a thingy to change over from cartidges.
Hope you are now fully recovered from your nasty virus.
    Love Di. xxx,

  7. Hi, Di,
A cousin crafted a feather quill for me many years ago. I ought to find a bottle of ink and give it a scratchy try. I love the idea of writing with an ink pen. Unfortunately for me, I'm the kind who ends up with splotches on the paper and ink on my fingers, hands, and arms. How it would get there, I don't know. I also love the scratch, scratch sound of the pen on paper. Hugs to you, Susie

    1. Hello Su-sieee,
so good to hear from you, I think the more modern day
Fountain pens are designed better and don't leak.
But then two of my Watermans pens are quite old but still
work perfectly without leaking, if you're interesting look them up on e-bay then look at the new pens on the Watermans site and do a price comparison.. Go on..... I'll give you my address and you can write me a letter.... never too old to start up old traditions and become pen friends..
      love n hugs

    1. Hello Arnoldo,
lovely to hear from you and thanks for your comments.
I totally agree with you,it's just the same in the UK.
Every thing is done now for speed and convenience, shame.
I remember my dear Mama steeping my ink splattered school
shirts in a white vinegar and cold water solution.
I think I had the whitest shirts in my year.
Although we weren't a very wealthy family, we were always
turned out well in our school uniforms and always had decent shoes, which my father would re-sole them when they were worn out.
And as we walked everywhere they soon got worn and needed repair..
      Blessings my friend.

  10. I bought myself Fountain pens a couple of times as a young college student. I love them. Can be messy though especially when I dropped and broke the bottle. But I remembered feeling classy using them.

  12. That reminds me my school time ! Now I don't even remember when I last wrote by hand, a shopping list for sure ! When I write something for me, I can't write by hand because it's not quick enough. To follow my thoughts I needed a typewriter already in the past, now, it's the computer of course, but it's with a keyboard I write !
What you said about cats is the TRUTH ! lol!
