T stands for The Three Queens. and The Three Graces.

Liverpool (my home city) has been throbbing with activity this weekend as the major British  shipping company Cunard has been celebrating it's 175th anniversary.

The three imposing buildings that line the Liverpool  waterfront,  (from the left) The Royal Liver Buildings, The Cunard Buildings and The Port of Liverpool Buildings. These magnificent buildings are known as The Three Graces.

.

The Queen Mary was the first ship to arrive on Saturday.

On Monday she set sail to greet her sister ships,  The Queen Elizabeth 2 and The Queen Victoria, in the bay of The River Mersey

The Three Queens arriving at The Pier Head. When they had lined up opposite The Cunard Buildings, they performed a very clever manoeuvre, turning to face the buildings. The icing on the cake was a fly past by The Red Arrows Aerobatic Display Team.

.

It is estimated that one million people visited this magnificent spectacle, over the weekend. We had a band from The Royal Marines playing, The Welsh Choral Society performing, along with folk groups singing sea shanties and  the street performers strutting their stuff too!  There were several Pop Up food stalls selling some delicious food,  from all over the world.

It's amazing the amount of talented people that live in this vibrant city.

My thanks to the truly amazing Denise for devising ABCW and Roger for his tenacity in his administration of ABCW.

best wishes to all,
Di..ABCW team.

  4. I'm a Brummie, now in the Isle of Man, but Liverpool is my favourite UK city. I'm a sucker for all things Beatles. Great post

  5. What a grand celebration to enjoy! I enjoyed the National Memorial Day Concert on TV. Memorial Day is a day set aside to honor those who've given their lives for our country. I also visited the cemetery where my husband is buried; small flags were available for us to put at our loved ones' tombstone.

  6. Lots of great plaster and mosaic work in those buildings courtesy of traveling Italian craftsmen.

  12. Roger: It was indeed awesome, I think the little tug boats helped with the manoeuvers in middle of the river!

  14. The lovely buildings are well named, and it must have been an amazing experience to watch the Three Queens arrive and manoeuver in preparation for the Fly Past.

  15. I love the last photograph it has all the superb elements of that amazing day. My timing was out as we were coming back from London so had to make do with seeing the event on the TV but not the same as being there like you. (The nearest I came was watching the students painting the ducks ready for the Cunard themed duck trail when I was in Liverpool weeks earlier).

  16. I wished I could see this show and hear the music. You British people know how to celebrate all kind of traditions and events.
Thank you for your kind words on my blog. At my age one is bound to face the loss of friends and relatives, who are the same age.
    Have a great week Di!

  20. When I was a kid, Gerry and the Pacemakers had a hit with Ferry Cross the Mersey. The Mersey Beat was instilled in all American teens and preteens. So when I saw your mention of the Mersey, I got this vision of Gerry, his lovely little cleft chin... ahhh. Small pleasures! Amy

  24. I don't normally like to go to huge events because the tremendous number of people overwhelms me. This one, though, if I had the chance, I would've gone. Everything about the day is impressive in your photos.

  25. The ships look so big! We have cruise ships pass our home in BC on their way to Alaska, but I don't think they are any where near that size. - Margy

  32. What fun, Di! I know very little about Liverpool. Make that hardly anything. Except for John and Paul being from Liverpool. Don't even know if George and Ringo were, too. Hmmm, it's time for a visit to Wikipedia.
