I means ' In all Honesty'.

Propositions by Stephen Dunn.

Anyone who begins a sentence with  "In all honesty"........ Is about to tell a lie. Anyone who says "This is how I feel" had better love form more than disclosure.

Same for anyone who thinks he thinks well because he had a thought.

Rodin.....The Thinker.

If you say "You're ugly to an ugly" to an ugly person-no credit for honesty, which always must be a discovery, an act that qualifies as an achievement. If you persist you're just a cruel bastard, a pig without a mirror.

Somebody who hasn't examined himself  enough.

A hesitation hints at an attempt to be honest, suggests a difficulty is present.

A good sentence needs a clause or two, interruptions, set off by commas,

evidence of a slowing down, a rethinking.

Before I asked my wife to marry me, I told her I'd never be fully honest.  "No one she said, had said that to her"

' I was trying to be radically honest', I said, but in fact had another motive.

A claim without a 'but' in it is,  at best, only half true.

IN ALL HONESTY,  I was asking in advance , to be forgiven.

I really enjoyed this  INTERESTING piece of work and I do hope, You do too!

My sincere thanks to DENISE for creating ABCW and to  ROGER ably assisted by Leslie in the smooth running of this meme. Also many thanks to the team of assistants who help with the visits.

 Best wishes Di,ABCW team.

  4. I must admit, Di, (in all honesty) that I'd never heard of Stephen Dunn before. But this is an intelligent and interesting idea about the phrase. *cheeky smile*

    1. I had heard of him Leslie, My English tutor, Roger McGough, introduced us to him, he was a great fan. I don't know if you have heard of Roger? He is a famed and published British poet, and frequently hosts a wonderful radio 4 programme called
'Poetry Please'... I can still hear his gentle
lyrical voice when he recited his poetry to us.
      'In all honesty'!

  5. "To be honest" is a good one too, I used to work with someone who used always used that phrase when telling a little white lie, usually to put someone off on the phone. As in - to be honest I don't have time to do that - oh yes we used to tease her when she used it.

    1. Hi Joy good to hear from you..'To be honest' definitely sounds a 'Northern'cliche. My Uncle Jack always used it when explaining to one of his customers (he was a mechanical enineer) that their beloved motor vehicle was ready for the scrap yard !

  6. And again you put my mind in a state of thinking..which is a good thing ofcourse... and yes I agree, one can never be totally honest to another person unless offending that other person doesn't matter.

    Have a nice ABC-day / – week

  8. Thank you for your comment. Yed it's wonderful to see my family in December, but snow is out of the question. We haven't had snow for several years now. That will be a disappointment for the grandchildren. In Australia is snow in winter in the mountains in July or June probably, but I have never seen it.

  11. A pig without a mirror would make an interesting story. I can see the pig looking all over for her lovely hand mirror which turns out to actually be a puddle of water. Years ago, when I read that anyone who prefaces his statement with "Honestly" isn't really going to be, I stopped myself from using the word. lol
