Thomas Jefferson. 1743-1826. Was the third President of the United States 1801-1809. He was a highly educated man, an American Founding Father, also he was the principal author of the 'Declaration of Independence'.
He coined the phrase ......
'All men are created equal',
which in my mind has an ironic twist because he owned plantations with hundreds of slaves working on them. To be fair to him he did inherit them from a relative. In 1807 Jefferson signed the Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves.

Moving on from Jefferson's statement 'All men are created equal'
The highly acclaimed novel by British writer George Orwell Animal Farm ( A brief synopsis of the story).
It evolves around a group of animals lead by the pigs, they decide to take over the farm and run it themselves, Old Major the oldest boar dies and the two younger boars Napoleon and Snowball, tired of the drunken farmer Mr Jones mistreating them drive him away, renaming the farm from Manor Farm into Animal Farm. The animals adapt the seven commandments of Animalism, the most import one being 'All animals are equal'...
Eventually as the animals adopt a human way of life the Mantra was changed to.....
'All animals are equal but some are more equal than others'.
Now for the final random 'J'....

Good for you to keep focus on the things you can, always better then to stay in sadness about things you can't.
ehhh what are 'blogger chums'?

Melody the word 'chums' is a euphemism (polite term or mild alternative) for friends or pals...
DeleteI keep forgetting that English is your second language, just demonstrates how good your language skills are xx

;-) Ahh okay thank you for explaining, I am glad to notice that it means what I thought it meant.
DeleteThank you for that lovely compliment, I'll try to do the best I can ;-)
And I am proud to may be a 'blogger chum' of you ;-)
Great choices! I think Jefferson forgot about the slaves because at that time, they were not considered "human." Rather they belonged to a class of animals and as such could be used as such.

I know Leslie so awful,in fact, unthinkable.
DeleteI wonder, did you get to see the Slave Museum in Liverpool on your previous visits.? I'm ashamed to say the wealthy shipping lines here were instrumental in shipping the poor souls from
Africa, stopping off here, then sailing on to their destiny in America. That is how our thriving Afro English community began, by some of the slaves jumping ship, then
being exploited by working for the rich merchants in the city, c'est la vie !

Hi Carol,
DeleteThanks for your kind comments, as I've been saying that I thought it may have been a rather dull contribution.
That's why I added the Jolly Miller on at the end.
Although he wasn't the original Jolly Miller
but the Miller from Camberwick Green BUT he was a Miller and he certainly looked JOLLY!

Hi Roger,
ReplyDeleteI'm not well up on US Presidents apart from Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Eisehower,, Nixon, Kennedy, Johnson Ford, Carter,Reagan, Bush snr and junior, Obamah and now the illustrious TRUMP....and even an Eskimo in his Igloo on the Artic has heard of the TRUMPETER...The more one can play with his name, the more you realise just how appropriate his name is.
Are you still shovelling snow ?

J is such an existential letter. That said, I have no idea what that means. It just popped out of my fingertips. Yup, just did. President Jefferson was an interesting fellow. Our country was fortunate to have him and his mates around then to visualize our government. Who knows how many revolutions and govts. we would've gone through otherwise.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that you're having a tough time walking right now. Is it your knees? Hope you're feeling well as you read through my comment. Hugs to you.
Susie
Hi Susie good to hear from you, I've just written on your blog and it's disappeared so I'll pop back and try again shortly.
DeleteMy condition is Rheumatoid Arthritis and it affects most of my joints.
It's got a grip of my spine now which disables me from walking now Grrrr...nevermind I have come to terms with it now and concentrate on the thing I can do, not can't do,
Have you made up a new word ? or a life crisis..
Take care love n hugs Di xxx
Yes, he was complicated, but also very gifted. I wonder if Jefferson's statement about equality referred to slaves as well, since he did father Sally Hemmings' children, one of his slaves. We need to remember that equating the slaves to the WASP's at the time would have been extremely controversial, so he wouldn't have been able to make it that specific. Anyway, just a point to ponder.
ReplyDeleteI know of his relationship with Sally Hemming's, which wasn't unusual in those days but considering his stance on slavery his actions, in my opinion, seemed duplicitous.
ReplyDeleteHe was indeed a very gifted man, not sure about his position on WASPS
though.
Thanks for your comments,

Animal Farm was a literature book I had to study.
ReplyDeleteYes, we are very proud of my little bro, known as Mr. WWF.
Hello Ann,
ReplyDeleteGood to hear from you again.
I wonder did you ever seen the animated film of Animal
farm? It certainly made it more understandable and
particularly for younger students.
George Orwell was a pen name his real was
Eric ARthur Blair, he was an outspoken supporter
of Democratic Socialism.
I like your little bro's pseudonym 'Mr WWF'most apt!
