P stands for Pamukkale

The spring waters tumbling into the river below.

Pamukkale ( Cotton Castle) is an enchanting and remarkable sight in Turkey. It is set high upon a plateau almost 400 feet high, rising in a curtain of stalagmites and stepped shallow pools, merging one into another on hundreds of different levels. It's described as a fairyland of cotton white forms with pale blue water cascading gently down.

Cleopatra's Pool.

It was formed by water laden with limestone from the thermal springs of Cal Dagi. Pamukkale is also home to Cleopatra's Pool.

.

We actually bathed in this beautiful part of Paradise.

Cleopatra's  Pool  is a basin full of thermal hot water that for centuries have given health to those who bathe in it. Pamukkale has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998 and is one of the most visited places in Turkey.

  5. Hi Anne,
Good to hear from you again.
We were fortunate enough to be able to paddle in the delightful waters but did swim in Cleopatra's pool, which was lower down the mountain.
The authorities have stopped people walking on the site now because of erosion.

Cleopatra's pool was surprisingly warm and quite beneficial to swim in.

  13. Beautiful! I've never seen anything like that before, even in pictures. So, do you think Cleopatra may have felt the same way you did bathing in the water.

I'm so taken with Turkey now that when I came across a Turkish cookbook at the library the other day, I checked it out.

  15. Hi Arnoldo.
Good to hear from you again. it truly was like Paradise there, just when we thought it couldn't get any better, we were taken to Cleopatra's Pool was beautiful too.
When the Garden of Eden was talked about in The Book of Genesis, Cleopatra's Pool is just how I imagined it, without the Serpent, I'm relieved to say !

  17. Hi Su-siee,
Thanks for stopping by and your comments.I bet the pool was a great hit with Cleopatra, I bet she gazed at her reflection in the crystal clear water.
I always picture Elizabeth Taylor when she starred in the block buster movie of Cleopatra. I never forget the scene when she sailed into Rome in the royal barge, to meet with Caesar.
She was such a beautiful woman, and oh, those violet blue eyes.
Little wonder that Richard Burton fell in love with her.
I'm pleased you had a look at the Turkish cookery book, one of my favourite recipes is
'Imam Bayildi' Aubergine(egg plant) stuffed with fragrant minced lamb and tomatoes.
I wonder, does The Mama grow aubergines in her garden?
You can also do a vegetarian version of it too, absolutely delicious.

  21. Hi Laurie, thanks for stopping by and your comments.
We were fortunate to be able to take a dip in the pools because, shortly after, people were banned from bathing because of erosion but there are a couple of hotel that have water from the sprin diverted into their swimming pools, so that is even better as you can totally immerse yourself in the health giving waters,
As I have arthritis I certainly did feel the benefit! I was virtually pain free for the rest of the holiday.

Thanks for stopping by and your comments, What a pity your thermal spa got lost after a volcano, they really are good to bathe in, particularly if you have any arthritic disorders!

  23. Hi Melody, good to hear from you again I'm sure you'd enjoy a thermal dip as the water isn't very deep, just enough to swim in and enjoy the benefits of the health giving water in the spa.

The water colour is amazing and bathing in the warm spa waters in Cleopatra's pool was wonderful, something I've never forgotten.
I have so many wonderful memories of Turkey and there's more to come at an appropriate time or rather, a suitable letter...

  26. I've seen something similar in Yellowstone National Park. Thermal pools are so interesting. You asked if Pinesap plants can kill the trees where they grow. I do not believe so. They are so small and usually get their nutrients from the decaying matter around the base of the trees. - Margy

  27. When I first set my eyes on those layer of thermal pools my first thought was Yellow Stone park here in USA. Ah I see now how so wrong I was, these look more prettier than the ones in Yellow Stone Park.

Thank you for visiting my blog.

Hi Margy, thanks for stopping by and your comments.
I think I've read somewhere about
thermal springs at Yellowstone Park, I shall have a look on google to see if there is any information about them.
Thanks for letting me know about the Pinesap, I rather like the look of that plant, almost sub tropical!

The previous commenter mentioned Yellowstone Park in the US so I am going to do a bit of research because I thought Pamukkale was unique....so perhaps not!

  30. I am so sorry to have been out of touch, Trubes! My goodness, how very beautiful Pamukkale is! I could just imagine slipping into that paradise and resting on those "cotton white" clouds with blue water cascading over me. Just two nights ago, we saw "The Water Diviners" so your post about Turkey felt very timely.
